Meet 2025 Award Recipient

Jake Herb

Jake came to the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai from Duke University, where he majored in Biology and English. Before matriculating into the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) in 2020, Jake was a post-baccalaureate research fellow at the NIH.

While at Icahn, Jake has served as an MSTP Class Representative on Student Council and as an Institutional Representative for Mount Sinai to the American Physician Scientists Association (APSA). In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, he spearheaded efforts to reinstate monthly social programming in the MSTP calendar and helped develop an annual student-led financial literacy workshop tailored to the needs of MD/PhD students. Jake is also the recipient of a Ruth L. Kirschstein NRSA Predoctoral Fellowship from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK).

Jake would like to thank his parents, Tom and Wendy Herb, for teaching him the value of leadership from a young age; his wife, Mackenzie, and daughter, Gemma, for their love and support throughout his training; and MSTP Director Dr. Talia Swartz for her dedication to the MD/PhD students and their training.

Jake anticipates completing his MD/PhD training in 2028.
